Concussion Awareness - "Heads Up Mississippi"

It’s finally fall, y’all! The leaves will soon change, the breeze will get cooler and the MS State Fair will come to town with lots of great food, rides, music and fun! October also means that fall sports season in full swing. And as such, we need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of concussions. Concussions can happen anywhere – football, soccer, volleyball, even riding a bike!

What exactly is a concussion?

Some people may believe that concussions aren’t that serious. Did you know with a concussion, there may or may not be signs of injury to the head, such as bruising or cuts? Every concussion is unique.

After a concussion, a person may feel a little different. They may experience cognitive, physical, emotional and/or sleep issues. Being knowledgeable of these signs and symptoms may help you identify when someone may need to seek medical treatment due to a concussion – and that could be lifesaving!

We are always trying to spread awareness about concussions and other TBI in MS through our organization and through partnerships within our state. One of these partnerships is with Heads Up Mississippi.

Heads Up Mississippi is a community-based partnership in association with the University of Mississippi Medical Center whose goal is to reduce the number of youth sports related concussions through education, outreach and advocacy across the state of Mississippi.
