Concussion - Warning Signs and Symptoms

What exactly is a concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.

Some people may believe that concussions aren’t that serious. Did you know with a concussion, there may or may not be signs of injury to the head, such as bruising or cuts? Sometimes, there is no visible injury at all. Symptoms of concussion can range from being hard-to-see to quite obvious, such as lack of consciousness.

Every concussion is serious, and should be treated as such. Left untreated, concussions can lead to long-term complications. Potential complications of a concussion include chronic headaches, memory problems, vertigo, and post-concussion syndrome, which is headaches, dizziness, mood swings, and brain fog that can continue for months or years after a concussion. Since the signs and symptoms of a concussion can be subtle, or mistaken for other conditions and illnesses, all concussions should be taken seriously. Many times concussions symptoms present differently in children, adults, and older adults. We can't stress enough: "If in doubt, have it checked out"
