Mississippi ranked #3 among US states reporting brain injuries

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death and disability in children, young adults and seniors. Mississippi, we think, is #3 in the country in the number of brain injuries reported each year.

Accurate numbers are hard to pin down due to the fact that a huge number of concussions are never reported.

A TBI is caused by an external force that injures the brain. A TBI can occur when a person’s head is hit, bumped, or jolted, when an object, such as a bullet, pierces the skull or when the body is shaken or hit hard enough to cause the brain to slam into the skull.

Among the leading causes of TBI are falls, motor vehicle crashes and traffic-related accidents, being struck by or against an object, assaults, violence or gunshot wound and military attack or bomb blast.

A non-traumatic brain injury is often referred to as an acquired brain injury or ABI. This type of brain injury is a result of an illness or condition within the body, and it is not a result of a blow to the head. The most common causes of a non-traumatic brain injury are stroke (leading cause), lack of oxygen (hypoxia), brain tumors, other illness such as cancer, brain infections (Encephalitis) and other infections or inflammation (why hyper-inflammation and immune response generation during COVID-19 is very concerning for brain injury survivors).

Founded in 1987, the Brain Injury Association of Mississippi is the only nonprofit in our state specifically assisting brain and/or spinal cord injury survivors, both civilian and military, and their families throughout the state of Mississippi. We provide timely and ongoing help through our referral network, support groups, survivor activities and events. Additionally, we offer injury prevention education and advocate for laws that prevent brain injuries. The Brain Injury Association of MS is an affiliate of the Brain Injury Association of America.
